22 key points added in the update of NTC 5926-1 2021

Know three reasons why you should have your elevator certified.

DANIELA ALEJANDRA CARO JUNCO

In recent years, the NTC 5926-1 certification requirements have been increasing and evolving to guarantee and improve the safety of users who use vertical transport and technicians who intervene in elevators. In addition, Compliance with the regulations provides reliability in operation and availability of the equipment.

The technical standard for elevators NTC 5926-1, which has been in force since 2012, has a new 2021 version that adds essential points, which we group into four 4 fronts:

- Documents

- Signaling

- Automatic Rescue

Handle platform

Below we will expand on each additional point that your elevator will need to comply with NTC 5926-1 from 2023.

Documents

For the new regulations, it is essential to have established protocols for access to the elevator keys in the event of an emergency, so the following points were added to guarantee access to the maneuver in the event of stranding:

The management protocol, elevator key custody.

There is no protocol for the administration, management, custody, use, and manipulation of the elevator opening key.

NOTE It is recommended that the protocol be drawn up between the installation company, the maintenance company, and the building administration."

Security key

"In the case of elevators without a machine room, when a special G security key is required for the rescue operation, said key does not exist or does not work."

Automatic Rescue

The following points guarantee that the elevator, without a room or with a machine room, has the necessary mechanisms to carry out the rescue maneuver:

Rescue Battery

The following points guarantee that the elevator, without a room or with a machine room, has the necessary mechanisms to carry out the rescue maneuver:

Manual operation with steering wheel

"In the case of electric elevators with a manual relief maneuver, when the means to move the cabin are fixed, this maneuver does not consist of a steering wheel without spokes nor is it smooth."

Two electrical devices for power interruption.

"In the case of electric elevators, the interruption of the electrical current of the electromechanical brake is not carried out by at least two independent electrical devices that cut off the machine's power supply."

Proper rotation of the traction sheave

"In the case of electric lifts with a manual relief maneuver, the clearance between the crown, the worm, and/or the coupling exceeds 90° of rotation on the steering wheel without moving the traction pulley."

Electric device for the steering wheel

"When the steering wheel for the emergency maneuver is removable, there is no electrical device that prevents the normal operation of the elevator, or it does not work until it is removed from the machine."

Signaling

Signaling points were added on the cabin as long as the upper travel was limited, and it was necessary to warn the technical team about its action if it were to pass a level. Additionally, information plates are installed on the tractor and intercom equipment.

Safety sign above the cabin

"When above the cabin, there is not enough space to contain a rectangular parallelepiped of 0.5 mx 0.8m) resting on one of its faces. There is no Safety sign which warns of the need to use mobile stops or a braking pre-activation system."

Posture safety sign

"There is no, or it deteriorates, a safety sign indicating the type of position considered for the shelter space provided.

Braking warning

"When there is not enough space in the pit to contain a rectangular parallelepiped of 0.5 m x 0.6 m x 1.0 m) resting on one of its faces, there is no safety sign that warns of the need to use mobile stops or a braking pre-activation system ."

Posture safety sign

"There is no, or it deteriorates, a safety sign indicating the type of position considered for the shelter space provided.

Plate on traction ropes

"Diameter of the traction cables less than 6% or more of their nominal diameter, according to the label or plate where the minimum number of wires is identified, their diameter, and year of installation.

NOTE The diameter of the cables is checked at a point on the line that usually comes into contact with the pulleys of the traction system."

Intercom identification

"In elevators with intercom, the reception team is not fully identified with the elevator to which it corresponds, or the identification is unclear."

Handle platform

The new regulations refer to the retractable platforms that some teams have to carry out rescue and maintenance maneuvers and the basic guidelines that must be followed.

Enclosure with openings < 4mm

"The enclosure of the well presents openings with a dimension greater than 4 mm without satisfying the safety distance established in Table 1. According to the case. NOTE The dimension of the opening corresponds to the side of a square opening, the diameter of a circular opening, or the shorter side of a slot associated with each case."

Platform with perforations > 15mm

"If maintenance or inspection of the machinery is required from a platform, it has perforations that exceed 15 mm in diameter."

Railing in compliance with height regulations

"In the event that maintenance or inspection of the machinery is required from a platform, this It is not equipped with a handrail or balustrade, in accordance with the provisions of the current regulations on safe work at heights, whichever modifies or replaces it."

Platform with restricted access

"In the event that maintenance or inspection of the machinery is required from a platform and it is handled outside the well, the platform does not have restricted access."

Electric device for retractable platform

"In the event that maintenance or inspection of the machinery is required from a retractable platform, it does not have an electrical safety device that prevents the movement of the cabin when the platform is deployed."

A mechanical device to immobilize platform

"In the event that maintenance or inspection of the machinery is required from a platform, the cabin does not have a mechanical device to immobilize it, when the platform is deployed and located in the travel path of the cabin or counterweight."

Retractable platform

"In the event that maintenance or inspection of the machinery is required from a platform that is within the travel path of the cabin or counterweight, it is not retractable."

Permanently installed platform

"In the event that maintenance or inspection of the machinery is required from a platform, it is not permanently installed."
